You will use them to transact and buy the services that will be discussed in this post. Here are the three main things that you’ll need to build a website.

1.) To Build a Website : Register a Domain Name

Register your domain name. A domain name is the name or the more readable address of a website. It uniquely identifies an Internet Protocol (IP) resource such as a website on the Internet. The domain name of the website that you’re looking at right now is www.blogsdb.com. If a website is an establishment or a business entity, domain names are equivalent to business names.

Domain names are registered to domain name registrars. These domain name registrars have a collection of domain services including web interface to manage your domains, domain name transfers, registrations, renewal, domain expiration protection and domain privacy services, together with an optional private domain registration where your domain is registered in the name of a proxy company. Most of these domain name registrars offer top-level domains (TLD) such as .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .asia and even country code top-level domains (ccTLD) such as .us, .jp, .co.uk, .in, .cn and many more. The domain name industry is continuously growing, so expect that the price tag goes low because of competition.

  • Listed below are a few of domain name registrars in the industry.
  1. GoDaddy.com – The largest and most popular registrar today. GoDaddy.com is rated the largest host name provider with over 50 million registered domains at the time of this writing.

  3. Dotster
  4. Tucows

Nowadays, there are a lot more domain name services on the web. Choose what you prefer and take time to read people’s testimonials and reviews about these providers before choosing one.

You should seriously consider registering your own domain name. You don’t need to be a company or an organization to register a domain name. However, try to consider the following criteria below before registering your domain name.

  1. It should contain a keyword or something unique which can be turn to a brand (i.e. brandable).
  2. Keep it short to make it easy for people to type your domain name on their browser.
  3. Make it easy to spell.
  4. Choose a name that’s easy to remember.
  5. Avoid hyphens when possible.
  6. Preferably a .com, a .net or a .org domain name, but this one depends on your purpose.

2.) To Build a Website : Sign-up for a Web Hosting Service

Popular Web Hosting Service Providers on the Web

Next thing to do after registering your domain name is to sign up for a web hosting service. You’ll need a web space or storage to place your website and become available online. Websites are placed or saved on web servers which are always connected to the Internet. You can buy your own web servers but they are actually very expensive, and not practical if you’re just starting up. Accordingly, you will need to rent that web space from commercially available web hosting services. Web hosting service is also referred to as a web host.

There are actually tons of web hosting companies that offer these services at affordable rates. That is why you should also consider several criteria in choosing the right web host. You may read the article How to Choose a Web Host as your guide in finding a web host for your website.

Fortunately, a simple text editor such as Notepad will suffice to start coding a web page. My personal favorite code and text editor program is NotePad++. It’s a feature-rich text editor, and can be downloaded for free. But for productivity’s sake, you have the option to use more sophisticated web development tools such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Eclipse, NetBeans, Microsoft Web Development, and etc. These tools enable you to design, code, debug and test every program for your web site.

Good thing, many web hosts are offering a “site builder”. This site builder will help you design and customize your website immediately.  It simply let you choose from the wide selection of web design, templates and themes, and then lets you to install these templates on your website.

Popular Content Management System (CMS)

The most popular web creation tool at the time of this writing is a Content Management System (CMS). CMSs are frequently used for keeping, monitoring, reviewing, modifying, and publishing documents, as the term itself says – manages your website’s content. One of the most notable uses of CMS is in blog publishing application which is designed to simplify the creation and maintenance of weblogs. A number of most popular CMS today are WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. These are open-source and community-maintained programs. Hence the advantages of using CMS are the availability of themes, plugins and both developer and user support. Moreover, as user, developers and their community grow, newer versions and updates are released for each platform. You may visit each CMS’s official site to learn more about its background and features. Among the three, WordPress is the most popular blogging platform used by millions of websites today. We also prepared a post regarding how to build a blog site using WordPress which will guide you in building a more dynamic and easy to manage website. But before jumping to that tutorial, you should first point your domain name to a web host.

There you have it! You should now have purchased your domain name, paid for a web hosting service, and chose a web development tool. After completing these three major requirements, you are now ready to set-up your website.
